Decorative Balusters for the Fashion Minded

Stair sticks do not only serve as braces for your stairs, and this is evident in the increasing popularity of decorative balusters. Baluster is actually a French word, which refers to the half-opened flower shape that the stick resembles. These decorative pieces have long been in use, dating as long as the ancient civilizations. However, findings have shown that balustrades for the windows and similar elements present in chairs and tables were the more common items during those times. For the fashion-minded, balusters make a good way to express one’s creativity in the house.

Changes in Baluster Designs Over the Years

Decorative balustrades were originally made of cast bronze. Over the years, the materials used to construct these architectural elements have varied. People may already choose from those made of cast iron, cast stone, hard wood and softwood, polymer stone, polyurethane, wrought iron and several others.

Aside from the materials used to make these balusters, its form and shape have also evolved over the years. Originally, it took a bulbous shape, like that of an unopened flower petal but other designs have come out as well. It used to take curvy shapes but now, it has also made use of squares and more edgy designs. At some point, designing a baluster may be similar to imagining a vase set on another vase.

Decorative balusters are often made with the use of the lathe, to make sure that it has rhythmic symmetrical designs. Many of them are often made with complicated and intricate designs but those who want it simple may also choose such designs.

Choosing Your Own Decorative Balusters

When it comes to finding the right balusters for your staircase, many things should be taken into consideration. For example, design is a very important factor in choosing, especially for the fashion-minded. The design of the stair sticks should not only be according to your preference but it should also work well with the overall design of your house.

Another factor to consider in choosing balusters is the materials used. If they were made of stone, they will surely not look that good when you have a wooden stair handrail. Having them the other way around will be an eyesore as well and your wooden sticks may not be able to handle the weight of the stair handrail. The color of the decorative balusters may not be as hard to choose from, since you can easily paint over them and change its look. Just make sure that the colors that you choose are those that will go well with the color of your house’s interiors.

A Note about Decorative Balusters

Spacing between the balusters must be accurate and must have the same measurements; otherwise, the balusters will not be as sturdy as they should. Besides, balusters that are too far apart will not look good aesthetically. Balusters are also not only limited as stair sticks. In fact, many buildings that make use of such an architectural element have incorporated it in their railings.
