Choosing the Best Anchors for Concrete Walls

When you want to install shelves on your concrete walls, it is important to make sure that you get the best anchors for your needs. Whether you want to put shelves on your living room, kitchen or bathroom walls, the anchors will be responsible for supporting the shelves, so make sure you get ones that will hold their weight.

Planning Your Shelving Units

Before you purchase the anchors for your shelving units, decide how long your shelving units should be, how many you want to install and what you plan on storing on them. After you have a rough idea of what you will store on the units, find out the approximate weight each unit will hold up. This will help you discover how many and how strong the anchors you purchase should be.

Concrete Anchors

It is important to purchase anchors that are designed to be used for installing shelves to concrete because concrete walls will hold things up differently than wooden or plaster walls. It is also important for you to determine whether your concrete walls are solid blocks or hollowed out. If you do not know, see if you can contact the builder of the house or a professional who will know.

While you are purchasing your anchors, take note of the maximum weight each anchor can hold up and purchase enough of those to support each shelf you want to install. If possible, get the most durable anchors that will hold the most weight, those will allow you to be more flexible in what you place on your shelf in the future. Look at the manufacturer's instructions to see any additional information that will help you in knowing how much weight they will hold.

Planning the Shelves

The first thing you should do before installing your shelves is to mark on the walls where you would like to place them. Make sure that they are high enough to hold the items you plan to store. This will help you make sure that you place the anchors in the right place and that you do not drill additional holes in your walls.

When you start installing the walls, space the anchors evenly across the wall so that they will be able to hold up the shelf properly. Make sure that you attach the anchors to the wall so that the shelf will be level. You can do this by measuring from the ground up or from the ceiling down and drawing straight lines between 2 or more points.

Drilling and Installation

You will need to drill holes using a hammer drill. A hammer drill has a carbide-tipped head that will drill through the concrete quickly to make sure that the holes are made evenly and will not have rough edges.

Install the anchors using the drilled holes as a guide and make sure that you tighten the screws properly so they do not fall out later.

Making sure that you use the right anchors will allow you to use your shelves for a long time without having any problems.
